Remixing

Remixing Facts & Opinions
  • A remix is essentially an alternate view or version of a song.
  • There are different approaches to making records just as there are different producers, DJ's and remixers.
  • The concept and roots of modern day remixing dates back to the late 1960's / early 1970's with the emergence of classic Jamaican Reggae and Dancehall. Whereby Studio Engineers would strip down and deconstruct an existing song in order to create an instrumental Dub version for the B-side of a record.
  • A lot of hip hop remixes employ the Dub tradition of giving the bass and drums most of the room in a mix.
  • A song is often remixed in order to extend its demographic scope and popularity.
  • Songs that were not so popular or successful the first time round are sometimes remixed in order to give them a second chance; a re-hash.
  • Remixes are especially popular in different genres of dance music and therefore considered to be the norm.
  • Remixing is an effective way of reaching target audiences.
  • Record Companies tend to use accomplished producers to record vocals and instrumentation prior to employing a Remixer / DJ to implement current dance floor trends in order to launch the record into the charts via the clubs.
  • Whether we like it or not, from a capitalist point of view; music is just another product, and as such, we should accept and indeed expect modifications to our own ideas.
